Citizen of the Year Award 2009
The annual award this year was presented by Club President Peter Morris to
GLENNIS ROPER.
Glennis a Yorkshire lass born near Halifax moved to Alsager in 1960 with her husband Gordon, they have 2 Daughters,2 Grandsons, and 3 Grand Daughters, all reside in Alsager.
In 1986 she joined the Alsager support group for
St Luke's Hospice and from 1988 she became
Treasurer, a position she still holds. She was also
asked if she would assist with the "Housebound Library"
run by the W.R.V.S. that was 22 years ago and Glennis
is still driving the van, "its a privilege to do this she said,
a much-valued service for people who can no longer visit
the Library to choose books for themselves".
1998 saw the formation of Alsager U.3.A.
Glennis and Gordon were founder members.
She volunteered to organise the occasional "Day Out"
for the local history group and when Gordon sadly passed away in 2001 Glennis found that planning days out helped her through a difficult time, nowadays its virtually a full time job as U 3 A usually have two days out a month and she tries to make them as unusual and interesting as possible together with trips away both in this country and Europe.
As a result of 20 years service to St. Luke's support group, 20 years service to the travelling Library, over 10 years service to U 3 A and she says she plans to go on.
Glennis Roper worthy winner of this years "Citizen of the Year Award".
Alsager Rotary Cyclethon 2009
Cyclethon was held on Sunday 7th June and was opened by the new Alsager Town Councils Chairman Simon Robertson 68 individual riders took part but the wet weather intervened in the afternoon but we were very
pleased with the number of families and young
children who took part one of which was a
10 year old boy who had had a heart valve
operation riding the course with his mother.
The newly formed Alsager Rotaract Club, part
of our extended family, helped with the
Marshalling which was very useful
To date this tears cyclathon has raised in
excess of £1500 for charity.
We would like to stress that the destruction
of the sign outside the Wilbraham arms
"Church Lawton Welcomes Careful Drivers" had nothing to do with the Cyclethon.
